THE CHRISTIAN LIFE (635–709)

This extensive section of The Hymnal 1982 groups together seventy-five hymns. In some ways, this is the most diverse section of the hymnal; “When Israel Was in Egypt’s Land” (GO DOWN, MOSES, 648) takes its place alongside “O Jesus, Joy of Loving Hearts” (DICKINSON COLLEGE, 649). All are loosely grouped under the broad theme of “the Christian life.” On a practical level, these are simply hymns that do not fit neatly into the other categories established in The Hymnal 1982. Nevertheless, this section of the hymnal contains some of the Episcopal Church’s most beloved and enduring hymns, including “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” (ST. COLUMBA, 645), “How Firm a Foundation” (FOUNDATION, 636 and LYONS, 637), “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind” (REPTON, 653), “Day by Day” (SUMNER, 654), and “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” (HYFRYDOL, 657), and “O God, Our Help in Ages Past (ST. ANNE, 680).
